Thumbsuckers Unite!
Namaste, Merhaba,Salaam, Hola, Sussreekall and HowYOUdoin’ to all of you BeautifulPeople! Alwaysalways sending you purelove from my heart! And jusss’LOOKY: it is a long weekend! (Victoria-yeah,thequeen-Day..in Canada….you ‘mericans get it next weekend, non?)
What will your weekend hold? Barbeques? Gatherings? Soirees? I will bet there will be SOME form of celebration involving food+drink. THAT fact, alone, is a testament to our society’s sheer abundance. We live such luxurious lives that we, not only get opportunities to “relax+socialize”, but we can get our hands on EXTRA food.
Wrap yer noggin around it. Remember to be grateful for the totality of your experiences. Remember that MOST of the people on our suffocating planet are suffering. Just be mindful. And really enjoy your festivities as they are a priveledge.
Food is, not only our luxury, but it is our emotional reward, actually. We REWARD ourselves with all manner of food+drink. We feel entitled and like we deserve a “treat” after “a hard workweek/workout/crisis/etc” this is weEird. But it is rooted within our psyche and our lil’broken(subconciously broken) hearts. It soothes us emotionally. Anything “by mouth” does.
Here’s the dilio: breastfeeding/connection with early “love”. When we are infants, our glorious mommies nurtured+fed us whenever we muttered or whined. Thus, emotionally soothing us through our rooting gobs. (Or gave us a bottle)
The pattern/behaviour is fixed.
As we grow up..whenever we need soothing we associate stuff through our mouths..instinctively. Some of our mom’s rewarded us/consoled/soothed us with “a cookie” or something. Not that that’s “bad”, but it is how we reward+soothe.
Keep going through life…thumbsucking…bubblegum..cigarettes…soothing-through-the-mouth=calming/rewarding. The Oral Fixation.
(See above photo of BelovedNicklas with a toy….case en point)
I was a card-carrying thumbsucker until I was, probably, twelve! LOL! (There is much written in psychology texts about what this, apparently represents in my “emotional lacking” but I doubt that…my mommy was+is a SAINT! Om Nama The Mama.)
I simply find it all intensely interesting, as we navigate our lives, with our flaws and habits, what our behaviours actually represent? Ask yourselves if you are filling some mysterious void? And,if it is a “mystery” how do we know there is a void?
Emotional human beings we are, ever-seeking fulfillment and love and soothing. How can we achieve this without our oral fixations? (Like-tada! GUM!!)
We can slowslowslow down and be mindful when we have our luxurious feasts. Our treats. Our rewards. It is better for us, physically…and, big shocker-emotionally.
This weekend gorge yourselves on “communication” during your activities and festivities. ENJOY the company of your families and friends. TALK and SHARE and LAUGH. SLOOOOWLY. Truly, that is rewarding.
We are so fucking fortunate, really, to be ABLE to have the opportunity. Om Nama Shivaya. How awesome and potentially soothing it is, to have our “long weekends”. Beautiful!
I struggle with my “gum chewing” and it takes a lot of self-discipline for me NOT to toss a wad of bubblegum in my yap on a constant basis. Duh! Don’t get me wrong: I know alllll about oral fixations. I am not conciously aware that I am actually trying to “emotionally soothe myself” or alleviate stress.
But I am.
Same goes for my “apples-at-bedtime”shtick. (Or maybe its the body’s habit of insulin-spike-at-7pm?)
I need emotional soothing (subconciously), too.
I just need to be aware of it.
And I want to share and communicate with you loveydovey people.
What do you do? Ask yourself-you will easily see it. And it may be a “who knew?” Moment. And maybe it will help you, as it helps me, to be more mindfully aware of your feelings?
Being aware of our own feelings helps us grow+evolve and hopefully live more fully…maybe even encouraging those around us to live fully!
Fill’er up and have an awesome weekend! Laugh and love and enjoy and, yes, REWARD yourself. Yes- you are deserving of a safe, loving, and full life. I wish that for you. :)
And if you had one wish for lil’ moi…may it simply be that I keep my thumb outa my mouth, my gum saved only for guests (like little handsoaps), and my breathyPranayama soothing my voids.
Okay….maybe bananas are okay???
Nom,nom, nomming my way through the weekend!
With love, respect, and purelove for you guys,
Om Sai Ram.
Love,
Biffy
Xo

Happy Queen Vicky days Bif!
Yes indeed we are blessed here in Canada. Imagine, we shower, wash our clothing and poop in water some people don’t get the right to drink!
As we celebrate our good fortune to be living in such a beautiful country, let us realize this.
I’m so fortunate that I can also give back a little to those who need help. It gives me hope.
Sweet wishes for a glorious summer.
XO, Anne
